Minecraft remains one of Xbox’s most important franchises, but new reports suggest Microsoft leadership believes the brand has not received enough investment compared with its full potential.
According to Game File, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has described Minecraft as “massively underinvested,” especially when compared with Roblox. The comment reportedly comes during a wider business reset at Xbox, which includes planned workforce reductions, studio changes, and a renewed focus on higher-priority projects.
The comparison with Roblox is central to the discussion. While Minecraft is best known for sandbox survival, creativity, multiplayer worlds, and community-driven play, Roblox has grown into a massive platform where users can create, publish, and monetize their own experiences. Several years ago, the two brands were reportedly closer in scale, but Roblox has since expanded more aggressively.
The report claims that Roblox has invested far more heavily in its business than Microsoft has invested in Minecraft. That gap may explain why Xbox leadership now sees Mojang’s flagship title as an area with room for stronger support, broader development, and potentially bigger long-term plans.
Sharma’s broader strategy appears to involve shifting resources toward projects and studios with the greatest growth potential. Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, was specifically mentioned among the teams expected to remain important in Microsoft’s gaming structure. King was also highlighted, with both studios reportedly now set to report directly to Sharma because of their large monthly active player bases.
For Minecraft fans, the big question is what increased investment would actually look like. It could mean faster updates, stronger creator tools, expanded marketplace features, new spin-offs, improved multiplayer systems, larger community programs, or more ambitious cross-platform experiences. Microsoft may also look more closely at how Minecraft can compete with Roblox as a creative ecosystem, not just as a game.
For now, no specific new Minecraft investment plan has been confirmed in the report. Still, the message is clear: Xbox sees Minecraft as one of its biggest long-term assets, and the company may be preparing to give the franchise a larger role in its future gaming strategy.
