Larian Studios has released an unexpected Baldur’s Gate 3 update that introduces support for Xbox Play Anywhere. The feature allows eligible players to access the RPG across Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and supported handheld devices without purchasing separate copies for each platform.
Campaign progress can now follow the player between compatible systems. Someone could begin an adventure on an Xbox console at home and continue the same save later on a Windows PC or an Xbox-branded handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally.
The update does not add new quests, companions, locations, or story content. Its main purpose is to make existing campaigns more flexible and easier to continue away from a primary console.
That convenience may be particularly useful for Baldur’s Gate 3 because a complete campaign can require a considerable time commitment. Portable access gives players more opportunities to continue long playthroughs or begin another character without remaining tied to one device.
Early community responses to the announcement have been positive, with some players describing Xbox Play Anywhere support as a reason to begin a second campaign. The RPG contains numerous character builds, companion storylines, dialogue outcomes, and alternate routes that are difficult to experience in one playthrough.
The release may also represent one of the final official updates for Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian has previously moved away from plans for major additional content as the studio focuses on its next project.
Larian is currently developing Divinity, a new turn-based RPG connected to the studio’s established fantasy franchise. The project is expected to offer both single-player and multiplayer options while serving as an accessible entry point for players unfamiliar with earlier Divinity games.
The future of the wider Baldur’s Gate series remains uncertain. Wizards of the Coast controls the franchise rights and has expressed interest in continuing it, but no studio has been officially confirmed for a potential fourth main game.
Elsewhere in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, Invoke Studios is developing Warlock, a third-person single-player action-adventure currently expected to arrive in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
A television adaptation connected to Baldur’s Gate is also reportedly in development at HBO. Details remain limited, although the project could potentially involve performers associated with the recent game.
For now, Xbox Play Anywhere gives existing Baldur’s Gate 3 owners a more convenient way to revisit the Forgotten Realms, continue an unfinished campaign, or discover how quickly one supposedly harmless dialogue choice can redirect another sixty hours of adventuring.
